This week, I had the profound honor of witnessing an extraordinary milestone in my son’s life. Ensign Joshua Ace Palinkas graduated from the Navy Nuclear Propulsion School, an achievement that places him among the most elite technical minds in the United States Navy. Known for its rigorous training and high standards, this program has played a key role in maintaining the Navy’s impeccable 75-year safety record for nuclear propulsion systems.
Joshua’s next chapter takes him into the Submarine Service, embarking on an engineering tour aboard a Nuclear Fast Attack Submarine. This elite unit represents the cutting edge of naval warfare, and it is thrilling to see him step into this role. The ceremony, held aboard the USS Yorktown in Charleston, SC, added an incredible layer of history to the occasion. The Yorktown, now a museum ship, served with distinction in its time, making it a fitting venue for this moment.
However, what made the day truly unforgettable was a deeply personal moment that connected our family’s past to its future. My mother, while sorting through family mementos, found the dog tag of my grandfather, William Hamilton. Bill served as a Construction Battalion engineer during World War II, building the runways, mess halls, and quarters that supported the Marines in the Pacific island-hopping campaigns. During the ceremony, my mother presented this dog tag to Joshua—a symbolic passing of the torch from one generation of Navy service to another. To witness this moment on such a significant day and aboard such a storied ship was nothing short of awe-inspiring.
I would also like to extend my gratitude to Commander Submarine Group TEN Rear Admiral Robert Wirth, Prototype Commanding Officer Captain Robert Rose, and Command Master Chief Machinist Mate-Nuclear (SS) James Oxendine, who made a special effort to accommodate this presentation. Their presence spoke volumes about the Navy’s culture—one where senior leaders actively support and celebrate the achievements of their newest members. As a parent, it is a privilege to see Joshua embark on a career that honors both his talent and our family’s legacy of service.
Bravo, Ensign Palinkas! The journey is just beginning, and I am so proud to stand beside you as you take these first steps.
