Hello Chicago, My Old Friend

“Hello Chicago my old friend, I’ve come to talk with you again.” The line echoes the sentiment of The Sound of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel—but this time, the conversation is with a city that once felt like home.
After eight years away, stepping back into Chicago is less about geography and more about memory. The skyline still cuts sharply into the horizon, the wind still carries that familiar bite, and the rhythm of the streets feels unchanged—yet everything is different. Or maybe it’s me.
O'Hare International Airport seems newer, the trains have received a facelift, and thank goodness, the Uber pickup zone is so much better organized. It’s a subtle but telling reminder that while the soul of the city holds steady, the infrastructure keeps evolving to meet the moment.
There’s something powerful about returning to a place that helped shape you. The coffee shops seem smaller, the streets more navigable, and the pace—once overwhelming—now feels almost comforting. Landmarks aren’t just structures; they’re timestamps. Each corner holds a version of who you used to be.
A short visit doesn’t give you enough time to fully reconnect, but maybe that’s the point. Chicago doesn’t demand a long explanation—it simply welcomes you back, lets you walk its streets, and reminds you of where you’ve been.
And as quickly as the visit begins, it ends. But the conversation lingers.
